- go to 1&1.co.uk - click on the panel labelled "WEB HOSTING"
- click on the heading "1&1 STARTER" or "CONTINUE" (you can ignore everything else on this page - the box on the left - "select a platform" automatically defaults to a Linux platform - with penguin icon - what we want - rather than Windows)
- next - choose your billing term - the longer you pay for up front the cheaper it is ... NOTE: 1&1 sometimes remove this option - so you will go straight to the next step - you will be billed for 12 months in advance)
- on the next page "Check the availability of your desired domain" - key in the domain name you require - e.g. mynewdomain and check the "co.uk" box(or .com if required, or both), then click "> Check"
NOTE: check carefully that you have correctly typed in your domain name!
- on the next screen you will see at the top that your chosen domain (hopefully) is available and the box "your selection" is already checked - click "> Continue"
- next comes the sales pages - "your name is your brand" - click "> no thanks continue without selection" - at the bottom of the screen (not "continue")
- then it's the Norton offer (or possibly another offer before this) - click "> no thank you continue order"
- then you see your basket details - quite often the set up fee for a hosting special offer virtually wipes out the benefits of that offer and commits you to a minimum contract term of 12 months - you can opt out of the special offer if you wish.
- now you enter your details. Leave the check button on for "use your user data to register your domain" and at the bottom of the page uncheck the ticked box next to "I agree that the registry Nominet ... etc" - this means your address details remain private. (NOTE: this opt out does not apply to .com domain names).
- the rest should be plain sailing - entering payment details and finishing off the transaction
